BRK Metrology Core

Overview of Services

Birck Nanotechnology Center, one of the most advanced facilities of its kind in the world, is designed to support multidisciplinary research in nanotechnology and to foster interaction between researchers and research disciplines. The Birck Nanotechnology Center, opened July of 2005, totals 186,000 square feet of cleanroom, lab, and office space. The heart of the building is a 25,000 sq. ft. class 1-10-100 nanofabrication cleanroom (Scifres Nanofabrication Laboratory). A portion of the Scifres Nanofabrication Laboratory is configured as an isolated air flow biomolecular cleanroom with separate entry and gowning areas. The building also includes over 22,000 sq. ft. of flexible laboratory space external to the cleanroom, and office space for faculty, graduate students, clerical, and technical staff. One of the highly specialized labs include ultra low vibration rooms for nanostructures research with temperature control to less than 0.1 °C. Other specialized laboratories include nanophotonics, crystal growth, bio-nanotechnology, molecular electronics, MEMS, NEMS, surface analysis, SEM/TEM, electrical characterization, RF systems, instruction, training, and precision micro-machining. The entire set of resources provided by this facility are designed to support collaborative interdisciplinary research in nanotechnology. The majority of equipment in Birck Nanotechnology Center is shared, and accessible to qualified and trained users from Purdue as well as other academic, industrial, and government laboratories outside Purdue.
